Dr Swarupmay & friends: euthenesia for pets

Swarupmay Majumdar We cannot have a social debate on such things... these variables can differ from case to case and from doctor to doctor...

I feel there is nothing humane in humane killing or euthenesia. Any one born in the world has the rights to die his natural death and we have no rights to kill or decide on their behalf becoz they belong to us...

  i would disagree doc, though its ur personal choice. as a vet its part of the job, to relieve the pain in incurable conditions for example distemper at its worst. its horrible to seethe pet suffer. think of the owner. in fact its high time the govt. agrees to euthanasia in humans.

  Its a controversial issue as far the law makers are concerned. But personally, i support euthanasia as far as terminally ill patients (animals, including humans) are concerned.
  Of course, it should be the last choice when all other choices have been exhausted and no doubt, IT IS ONE OF THE TOUGHEST DECISIONS TO TAKE !!
  But at the same time, i respect the views of the people who are against euthanasia, without necessarily agreeing to them.

  I agree and respect your thoughts but personally I feel, I will never ever do it again from now on, whatever may it be. becoz it is killing and I dont want to do it anymore. I have euthenized a pet 3 years back, with tears in my eyes, I was forced to do it but Now I have understood its not my type of job. I will not do it at anycost , personally. I accept and feel your opinion is as good as mine . thanks

  Yah, it is difinitely difficult decision, I agree with doc Unny... When I was also in practice, I had euthanized a puppy infected with distemper, the puppy was in terminal stage or the condition was so severe already, yet I let the owner decide for the it,,, if they are able to see the puppy in its helpless condition... but in human, it would be ...   Letting an animal suffer needlessly is INHUMANE... animals do not have a voice and we as humun beings at times need to make decisions on their behalf... im sure no pet owner wants to euthanise their pet but we need to do whats right for the animal and letting it suffer is just not right ...we would be no better than people who encourage animal abuse..

  the docs r right in their standpoinds. I hv a distemper affected pup with me this yr. I cud not sleep prperly last several months for her screming with pain . Now she is ok having slight limping. I hv patience ......in normal condition none wud hv tolerated.

  For her survival i am extremely grateful to three persons one from bangalore Mr.n.subramanya rao, my friend who explored homeo med to stop her loud crying second Mr D. chakraborty of CCTfrom kolkata n his vet a fine gentleman who did the rest. without their help the pup wud hv been no more..... last but not least the FB helpline thru homeo med tht might hv been an effective boost.. now i look at this pup n think of her strange fate.

  I had been treating all most, most of the cases being sent, left out or rejected for not being treatable. it contains like distemper case, back injuries and paralysis, epilepsy.....what not. I have always stood by them and believed in God' wish that we can only take care and not more, I had been tremendously sucessful and happy to help so many ...   @ Debasish: Exactly, a pup severely affected with distemper in its terminal stage makes annoying sounds because of pain and episode of very frequent epilepsy... As a vet, we know that distemper is not a fatal disease but a debilitating one esp. for very young pup, the virus destroys the nervous system of the animal in which no drug can reverse the process...

  I treated distemper cases, but there are really cases that the damage on the nervous system (brain) is so severe then I give the owner an option if they are willing to handle the situation themselves or have the animal under my care and pay my professional and hospitalization charges even improvement of the case could not be expected or until the animal dies... In short, I still let the owner decide...

  just for a short info: we also study humane killing (slaughter in food animals) as well as ending the spread of the infectious disease, to be specific rabied animal in a less stressful way in part on the animal... though euthanasia for pet will be an option, but euthanasia to a rabies-infected animal is a must...!

  pbly u r right when death is a must for rabied dogs one may choose this option of mercy killing.I pray to God smone anywhere may come out with successful invention of rabie serum /vaccine.......the most dreaded disease one can think of but had i been a vet i wud never prefer any killing.   None can return her mom any day! Surely this is not in reference to any of the above discussion but quite relevant. Here in SBI car parking area one wud find a dog [bitch] little above a yr whom i saved last yr hit by the chief's car when lying under it is waiting for her mom to return who died of rabie few months back.....with all her litters.....

  OK what I want to say about this topic is one simple point.
  When you choose to become involved in the medical field you should not use your emotions while you are working you should do everything that is right (not what you think is right)
  In our Job we should think about the owner as he is our ... See Morepriority we can't force an animal owner to keep paying for his animal.
  I didn't perform Euthanasia in my clinic till now as I always try to avoid it but in some cases there is no choice as a case of aggressive street cat that had a car accident broken jaw blind ..etc.
  which needs intensive daily care which the owner cant afford financially or even he cant do it because the cat is supper aggressive what you would do :) leave her in pain till that cat die from hunger ??
  Excuse me all but I believe emotions are Vet's and Dr's enemies do what is right not what u feel is right!!!

  lol, no no dr.swarupmay all what I am saying is a personal point of view out of my Narrow experience I saw many students who were against Euthanasia for emotional reason. but still sometime when u work in a shiltter and you recive 4 to 5 days old kitten Hypothermic wtih URT and and daily you get about 20 of them it is not possible to treat so you have to euthanize it, this is the last worse choice but still it is a legal choice.

  I believe all creatures deserve a kind and humane death and I believe it is possible with proper euthanasia when all has failed and death is near and the creature (human or other) is suffering and/or in pain. It is what I want personally.

  Debasish Majumder thats correct but every death is not always justified n ethical wht was our point of discussion. dog owners n even practioners fall victim to this. i know a chap boasting of having his pet euthanised for Rs 600/ due to not being able for his upkeep n old age..... ppl having diversity in their minds n not suppoesd to be real pet parents always.I obviously differ. In murder person is accused and for death penalty state is accused. We have to stop both the things. Mercy killing and death penlaty!!!

  Debasish Majumder In philosophical aspect Dr sipai is 100% correct but.......a killer must hv to be killed [hanged] to keep the soceity safe n sound......but again tht too has to be judged with wise consideration by the judiciary ......the situation of the crime etc.....Capt Nanabati[indian navy] killed prem Ahuja on adultery ground but he was spared..... but surely we were discussing abt euthanasia.
